Are you finding jobs? Getting interviews? Nailing the interview? Steve Treibel, of Treibel Partners, Inc., gave a presentation at the PDMA So Cal meeting on Tuesday night at UCI University Club. Steve presented some great tips that I’d like to share with you here:

Short-cuts to finding job opportunities -

  • Google alerts – set up an alert so the opportunities are emailed to you directly. Set up a separate alert for each job title. Use the OR feature to choose your target locations. Use the minus sign (-) for areas of interest to be removed from the search. Use hyphens on search criteria that is more than one word. Here’s an example:

“apply Irvine OR Long-Beach OR Santa-Ana OR Anaheim Product-Manager –bank –automotive –financial –technology”

I knew about Google alerts for target companies so you can stay on top of press releases but this is a new idea for me. I haven’t tried it yet, but I plan to implement it today.

  • Linkedin – search for job opportunities on Linkedin. Use the advance search criteria to search whatever radius from your city is your target.

Don’t wait for new job postings. You need to “Target, Hunt, and Promote” according to Steve:

Target companies:

  • Develop list of 15 companies (this is an evolving list that will change and grow and as do your research) – this is your “bull’s eye list” (or your “A” priority)
  • Develop a list of another 15 companies for your “ring 1” on your target (or your “B” priority)
  • Develop another 20 companies for your “ring 2” on your target (or your “C” priority)

Hunt for information:

  • Use Google, Linkedin and the company website to find out more about the company (i.e., what challenges are they facing, dynamics of the company, who’s on the executive team, etc). You can Google titles with the company name, and check your Linkedin network for past and present employees.
  • You should have a snapshot of the company in as little as 15 minutes

Promote yourself:

  • Ask your network of contacts for information and warm introductions in the company
  • Connect and volunteer with industry associations
  • Volunteer with charitable groups
  • Update others on your status

Nailing the interview – According to Steve Treibel “The well-kept secret – It’s mostly about… Packaging!”:

  • Prepare for interviews by having 5-6 power stories including obstacles, skills, and other people.
  • By packaging, Steve is referring to how you dress, your body language, connecting with your interviewer, and more.

Steve had a lot of information on interviewing including some common mistakes. In fact, Steve Treibel wrote a book on the subject! He included lots of great questions, not only ones you need to be prepared to answer but also great questions to ask. He even provides sample answers in his book.

Thanks again Steve for a great presentation!
